Crunch

Wine snobs may already know this, but you can predict a wine’s quality with a formula:

Wine quality = 12.145 + 0.00117 winter rainfall + 0.0614 average growing season temperature – 0.00386 harvest rainfall

Orley Ashenfelter is the statistician who used super crunching of data to come up with this equation.  Statistics are used in all sorts of crazy ways.  For example, Harrah’s Casinos predicts the amount of money you will lose gambling before you become unhappy and will have a “Luck Ambassador” come by and give you comps if you start to approach this number.
